“Rwandan widows and children for Jesus” is the translation of the French abbreviation VERWAJE. This ministry was launched after the genocide and massacres that befell our country in 1994. Scripture Union Rwanda wanted to make its contribution, as the victims of the wars were a great burden for the whole nation.
Widows and orphans are identified by the local committees and some assistance is given to them. The local committees follow this through with organised prayer groups and they share the word of God with them. Other groups have gone further and launched small income generating initiatives where they work in cooperatives.
Verwaje also edits Bible reading notes for children. Seminars are organised for Sunday School teachers, and camps for children are held every holiday. The children who attend them are from different denominations. In addition to the word of God, different topics are discussed, for example children’s rights, tolerance and HIV / AIDS. Recently Scripture Union Rwanda launched a new program assisting street children. Thanks to this new program 30 children have been brought back to normal life. They now go back to school and they are given lunch and taught the word of God every day in the SU compound.
